College History
BACKGROUND
Shirati College of Health Sciences (SCHS), (Formally Shirati School of Nursing) was established in 1959 as part of Shirati KMT Council Designated Hospital (formally Shirati KMT Hospital) with the aim of generating skilled healthcare providers who would later on work in the hospital and decrease the burden of inadequate healthcare workers, which was by then a greater problem. Ever since, the hospital has been acting as a teaching and learning area for SCHS students for over 60 years.
OWNERSHIP
The college is owned by Tanzania Mennonite Church (TMC), in present ‘KANISA LA MENNONITE TANZANIA’ (KMT) under KMT Central Committee (CC) which oversee the governing of the institution. The College assumes its status as autonomous institution with its Advisory Board and college management committee, which oversees the operations of the College under the KMT CC in collaboration with various Government bodies/regulating authorities.
CHANGES
Since its establishment the college has gone through dramatic changes leading to expansion of its enrolment capacity, from initially 13students in 1959 to capacity of 300 and currently 400 students as of 2020. This has gone hand in hand with the increase of number of programmes offered to 2 (Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery and a Diploma In Social Works) for both pre and in service students. Currently plans are underway to add the third programme (Diploma in Pharmaceutical Sciences) this year (2021) and other 2 programmes (diploma in Clinical medicine and a Diploma in medical laboratory) in the year 2022.
The integrated courses has been developed to fulfill the needs of the health sector, the labor market demands, legal and professional needs that currently emerging in our country and world-wide.
Shirati College of Health Sciences boasts on its achievement of producing well educated, skilled and knowledgeable healthcare practitioners across the country and abroad in their thousands. Our alumni are spread across the country and are among the leading in provision of skilled practices in clinical setting.
The college also do get its students from the neighboring countries of Kenya and Uganda who upon completion of certificate equivalency, receive an equal opportunity to apply and get selected to join various programmes we offer. We do receive overwhelming positive feedback of their work upon completion of their studies through various stakeholders found there and are happy to see the fruits of our efforts.
